I decided I HAD to read Creation Lake when I saw Brandon Taylor tweet something like, “I think this book gave my Lyme disease”. Sometimes critique definitely crosses into plain meanness!
As far as mouse movies go— my siblings and I loved The Rescuers!
Gunnar, I bet you have insightful thoughts on critique from an academic perspective!! I’m curious what you thought of Creation Lake—I think I need to try it, too!
The Rescuers!! I absolutely love that movie. Probably my fave mouse movie as well :)
I DNFed it halfway through😭🙈. It was interesting! And under other circumstances I probably would’ve finished it— the narrator is definitely a CHARACTER, but I think that was part of Kushner’s commentary. She read like a sort of self-assured-bimbo, which I think paired well with the asides about evolution and human development. It was full-circle—like she was her own femme fatale.
I love this so much. Bullet in the brain and ratatouille are some of favorites as well. It’s the dream for something you create to ever elicit the reaction the ratatouille does in that critic! I have back to back workshops tonight for my MFA and I’m really going to keep this in mind :)
Kaia, your words are an inspiration! I love you!
Thank you, Kay Kay! Love you too!

FASCINATING. I’m kind of nervous to read it—how exciting, ha!
